The Kilimanjaro Marathon (42.2km), Half Marathon (21.1km) and Fun Run (5km)

The Kilimanjaro Marathon (42.2km), Half Marathon (21.1km) and Fun Run (5km) is going into its 13th year! As a fully registered IAAF race, the Kilimanjaro marathon has official marshalling, time-keeping and refreshment points at regular intervals. It may be used as a qualifier for Comrades. The race is run under the watchful eye of Mount Kilimanjaro, with the altitude gain being quite manageable and with the entire race being completed between 830 and 1150m asl, on paved roads.

The Kilimanjaro marathon route leaves Moshi stadium and heads towards the town, and then along the main road to Dar-Es-Salaam for approximately 8-9km. This section of the route is relatively flat. Then the course will turn around and head back to the town of Moshi, tracking down into the actual town itself before turning toward the mountain and heading up a long, steady gradual ascent towards Mweka. The turnaround point marks approximately 32km and the last section is a fast downhill run back toward the stadium.

For those running the Kilimanjaro half marathon, the route also starts at the Moshi stadium and after a short section on the flat, it follows the gradual uphill route to Mweka - as per the full marathon - before turning around at approx 10km to return to the stadium again. The atmosphere in the stadium is electric with local bands playing, entertainment, crowds of local enthusiasts to cheer the runners, and lots of food and drink for sale.

Cut off time is 12:30 for both the full and half Kilimanjaro marathon. Medals and tshirts are available to finishers.

Kilimanjaro Marathon and Climb

The Kilimanjaro Marathon can be run on its own, or combined with any of the Kilimanjaro climb packages. Mt Kilimanjaro has the highest peak (Uhuru Peak) in Africa at 19,341 feet (5,895 metres). There are six different trails for reaching the summit of Uhuru Peak. Of all of the possible trails to take to arrive at the summit, two have a higher probability of successful completion than the rest. These are the Lemosho and Machame trails. Lemosho covers 42 miles over 8 days, and has the greatest elevation gain of all the trails. This gives you more time to adjust to altitude, which gives you the highest chance to successfully reach the summit.

If you are climbing Kilimanjaro and running the marathon, it is recommended that you complet the climb first.

Kilimanjaro Marathon and Climb, plus African Safari or Zanzibar Beach Option

For after climb and marathon relaxation, consider the white sand beaches of Zanzibar or an African safari in wildlife lodges. The wildlife lodges on safari are very luxurious, close to nature, have great views, comfortable beds, showers, and amazing food.
